2 • Delivering online learning with The Learning Centre (TLC): The ASBA’s online platform: The Learning Centre, will be entering its third year of production with the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, and we have great plans for its development and implementation. We continue to add self-standing online courses which are designed to be accessed on demand, and to address specific outcomes in direct connection to governance needs. • Government relations: ASBA has made a concerted effort to ensure we are advocating to the appropriate level of government, be it municipal, provincial or federal. ASBA wants its members’ voices to impact government policies and legislation in a timely manner. To this end, ASBA can provide advice to member boards as they are advocating to government regarding local issues that matter to them. ASBA is also building on the momentum of its Indigenous Advisory Circle, and continues to work with its members to educate school boards about the importance of the Indigenous perspective in the work of school boards and trustees. For the second year, ASBA and the Circle celebrated 12 outstanding students who received the Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards, held at Government House on May 11, and hosted by the Honourable Lois. E. Mitchell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. The event was attended by the Ministers of Indigenous Relations and Education. Alberta also elected a new government on April 16. And with a new government comes new opportunities and challenges. Our government’s Speech from the Throne took place on May 22, and included government’s intention to proclaim the Education Act, revise Alberta’s curriculum and allow for an increase in the number of charter and private schools. ASBA will be advocating to government on a number of other initiatives, including ensuring that ASBA is involved in a funding formula review. Lastly, ASBA is excited to host the CSBA National Congress 2020 in beautiful Banff, Alberta! While we are confident provincially, events will continue to unfold at a rapid pace, ASBA is excited and energized by the passion of our members, and by the confidence they have shown in their Board of Directors, and in their executive team. We continue to be committed to our vision of Excellence in Education Through Exceptional School Board Governance. Respectfully submitted: Lorrie Jess, President, ASBA Dr. Vivian Abboud, CEO, ASBA
