Statement from the Canadian School Boards Associations on School Board Governance in Québec

Across Canada, minority-language communities have the constitutional right to control and manage their local school system. The Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) is very concerned that Québec’s provincial government is appealing the decision of the Québec Superior Court which unequivocally upholds this right.

The introduction of a new Bill which would empower the education minister to annul decisions of locally elected school board trustees and give the government the power to name and terminate school board directors general, clearly infringes on the constitutional rights of minority-language communities in Québec.

The CSBA continues to be very concerned with the elimination of French majority-language school boards and the ongoing threat to the rights of the English-speaking community. Locally controlled, democratically elected school boards are best for students and the communities in which they live.
