Canadian School Boards Association supports Charter minority language rights

The Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) supports the Quebec English School Boards Association’s constitutional challenge to Quebec Bill 40 entitled An act to amend mainly the Education Act with regard to school organization and governance.

“Any erosion of Charter rights should be of grave concern to all Canadians”, says President Laurie French. “The rights of minority language English Canadians in Quebec and French minority language Canadians outside Quebec to manage and control their schools and school system must be protected.”

The CSBA and its members and communities continue to be dismayed with the decision of the Quebec government to eliminate majority French school boards. Bill 40, is a significant erosion of democracy and violates Charter rights.

Public education deserves democratically elected community representation via governing school boards who have the autonomy to make the best decisions for their students.
