For Immediate Release

(OTTAWA) - The Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) is cautiously optimistic after hearing the Speech from the Throne, and applauds the Federal Government's renewed emphasis on children and youth.

"Children and youth are a high priority," said Gary Shaddock, President of CSBA. "Canada cannot be a player in the global economy without ensuring that every child and youth gets the right start in life and has the chance to realize his or her full potential."

CSBA is encouraged to see the government addressing a broad range of issues including child poverty, bilingualism of high school students, English-as-a-second-language/French-as-a-second-language for immigrant children and youth, youth justice, and education opportunities for Aboriginal children on and off reserve.

"Prioritizing and financing will be critical, " added President Shaddock. "We look forward to working with the government in setting priorities and determining budgetary requirements, to ensure that the vision outlined in the Throne Speech is translated into action."

The Canadian School Boards Association is the national voice of school boards. It is comprised of nine provincial school board associations representing over 400 school boards and serving more than four million elementary and secondary school students.
