(OTTAWA) - The common peanut butter sandwich has become the centre of debate in many schools and communities because, although it is a nutritious staple for some young people, for others even being near it can be deadly. The number of life-threatening allergies, especially to peanut products, is increasing. School boards are developing policies to reduce the risks to students who may be affected.

To assist school boards in addressing these concerns, the Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA), with support from Health Canada, is releasing a new edition of their popular publication Anaphylaxis: A Handbook for School Boards.
(see backgrounder)

Anaphylaxis is the medical term for "acute and severe allergic reaction". It can be rapid and fatal. Symptoms of anaphylaxis can develop within seconds of exposure, beginning with itching, hives, or swelling of the lips or face. Within moments, the throat may begin to close, choking off breathing and leading to death.

"School boards have done an effective job of managing the challenges of life-threatening allergies," said Gary Shaddock, President of CSBA. "We want to make sure that they continue to have new information so that they keep their policies and practices up-to-date."

The 2001 edition of Anaphylaxis: A Handbook for School Boards has updated information from medical and legal professionals. It contains new sample policies from school districts across Canada. It also has practical suggestions and insights as well as an attractive new appearance and readable approach.

The Canadian School Boards Association is the national voice of school boards. It is comprised of nine provincial school board associations representing over 400 school boards and serving more than four million elementary and secondary school students.
