July 19, 2001
For Immediate Release

(CALGARY) - Members of the Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) elected new Executive Officers to serve for the 2001-2002 year at their Annual General Meeting held today in Calgary, Alberta.

Gary Shaddock of Ponteix, Saskatchewan was acclaimed as President. Gary has served on CSBA's Board of Directors and is currently President of the Saskatchewan School Trustees' Association. First elected as a trustee in 1985, Gary has served on the Shaunavon board of education since 1988, including 10 years as board chair.

"I believe as school boards we must be proactive and look to the future," Shaddock says. "By virtue of our vision and our leadership, we hold the future direction of the children of Canada in our hands."

Bruce Wallace of Ancaster, Ontario will serve as First Vice-President for the 2001 - 2002 year. Bruce served this past year as CSBA's Second Vice-President and was previously the Ontario Director for CSBA's Board. Bruce is a former teacher and principal who has dedicated many years to democracy and public education.

June Alteen of Corner Brook, Newfoundland will be CSBA's Second Vice-President for the coming year. Former President of the Newfoundland and Labrador School Boards Association, June has also served on CSBA's Board of Directors and several committees. She has seen times of tumultuous change provincially and now that her provincial commitments are ending, is ready to turn her attention to national issues.

Kathy LeGrow of Topsail, Newfoundland will be CSBA's Executive Past-President for the 2001 - 2002 year. Kathy served from 1999 - 2001 as CSBA President and before that as Vice-President (1996 - 1999). A former President of the Newfoundland and Labrador School Boards Association, Kathy will bring her experience and dedication to the issue of children in poverty to the Executive Committee in the coming year.

The Canadian School Boards Association, the national voice of school boards, is comprised of nine provincial school board associations representing over 400 school boards serving more than four million elementary and secondary school students. CSBA exercises leadership by advocating excellence in public education and promoting the value of locally elected school boards through collaboration, research and information sharing with other partners.
