NEWS RELEASE

April 12, 2001

OTTAWA - The Canadian School Boards Association (CSBA) is proud to announce that, with the generous support of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Poverty Intervention Profile: Partners in Action is now available in French and English.

The Poverty Intervention Profile has been published for school boards to use to help mobilize key community partners. The goal is to work together in supporting the 20% of students who are living in poverty.

The document is a comprehensive holistic tool that identifies 24 areas of intervention from pre-school programs to strategies for community involvement. These interventions can be undertaken to increase the chances of educational success for children and youth living in poverty.

CSBA developed the Profile as the second phase in its commitment to address the negative impact of poverty on readiness to learn and eventual school success so that all children can take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the education system.

Based on best practices that currently exist across the country, the Profile has been tested extensively across Canada through consultations, focus groups and ten pilot sites including a Francophone board in Nova Scotia. The program has the support of a number of national groups that are involved in child poverty.

The Profile includes a comprehensive manual and bibliography to assist school boards in assessing their current programs, identify areas for improvement and provide a model for boards that do not yet have such programs.

The Canadian School Boards Association, the national voice of school boards, is composed of nine provincial school board associations representing over 400 school boards serving more than four million elementary and secondary school students.
